My first time going to the new emergency room yesterday with my daughter. We drove almost an hour to go to this facility. Very disappointing and the worse doctor by far my daughter has ever had encounters with. He was very rude and kept wanting to push us out every chance he had without helping her. He constantly made her feel like she was just lying and wasting his time. He did no bloodwork (even after an iv was ordered for a ct) and she still left there as sick as she was when we arrived. We left there with the same questions we went in with and came home with no help. Again, very disappointing when we used to think highly of New Hanover!
The right had does not inform the left hand as to what is going on from one shift to another. Permission was granted by the head nurse for two persons to stay with the patient. As a courtesy one person stepped out and waited for two hours in the waiting room so as not to take advantage of her kindness. The person who was waiting in the waiting area was asked to step back in to hear what the doctor had to say and the new male head nurse raised an issue about the two persons. When he was told permission was given he insisted he did not give that permission and that whom ever did give that permission was violating the rules and that the said person had to leave. Security escorted the person out. This is the second bad encounter at this hospital. The first was a mistaken diagnosis of nothing wrong when in fact the patient had a broken left foot and broken right ankle. Patient being told when complaining of tremendous pain. "There is nothing wrong with you. You walked in here and you can walk out."
I actually would rate my experience as a zero. I had a procedure at the Outpatient Services unit. Aids stood around talking on their phones and socializing loudly, no one offered to adjust my bed, give me a warm blanket, or even be remotely friendly. I arrived as requested at 7:00am for an 8:30 procedure. There were only 3 patients at this time. The other two were treated and left the hospital, while I sat there for 3 hours. No one checked on me or updated me on my wait during this entire time. At 10:00, we finally asked for an update (total wait time was more than 3.5 hours). The first "nurse" I had seen arrived and said there was a delay in getting my lab work sent over. I later learned that the aid who initially took my blood walked around with it in her pocket for 3 hours without turning it in to the lab, apparently until I inquired about the wait. The "nurse" rather than telling the truth, skated around the truth. When it was time to leave, the aid at fault did approach me with another aid. Rather than accepting responsibility and apologizing, she remained silent until I confronted her. She reluctantly admitted responsibility, was surly and sarcastic, but was not particularly apologetic or remorseful. She deserves to be placed on probation or fired. Unfortunately, I do not know her name. This is the only New Hanover experience in which I did not receive a card with the names of the personnel who treated me. Since this is pretty much the only game in town, I just hope I receive better care in the future.
I came in through the Surgery Center yesterday for bilateral total thyroidectomy. Beginning with the lady at the desk who helped me with registration, every person I have had contact with has been awesome! Every employee and volunteer has gone above and beyond to be helpful, keep me comfortable and provide the best care possible! I can't praise them enough! My nursing staff has been awesome! I am thankful for such skilled and caring people in my time of need.
I had intestinal surgery here after the hurricane. The surgeons did a wonderful job taking out the bad parts from me. Everything about this hospital is great. The nurses, food and room service, cleaning staff, technicians, etc, all do the best they can. Around the clock care. They coaxed me to walk. Big screen TV. Comfortable bed in a private, quiet room. Ultra clean and nicely decorated. And they gave me alternatives for post hospital care, like a rehab center and nurse visits. Like most things in life, if you treat the people helping you with compassion & patience, they will respond to you in kind. No different here. I'm very lucky to have been here for my operation and 3 week stay.I'm on the mend and getting better every day at home.
